Foods High in Antioxidants and Why You Need Them

The best way to stay healthy is to eat healthy. Healthy foods are foods rich in antioxidants and vitamins. These help you fight diseases and are also beneficial in the anti-aging process. Here we look at some of the foods that are rich in antioxidants and how they can help in fighting diseases.

  • Nuts
    Nuts offer healthy fats and a good amount of carbohydrates and proteins. Therefore, they may just be the most balanced food in the world. Each nut offers different minerals, types of fats and phytochemicals. The antioxidants contained in nuts help lower cholesterol.
  • Dark Green Leafy Vegetables
    These super vegetables are loaded with nutrients and antioxidants that help fight diseases. Furthermore, they are packed with potassium and magnesium. They are overloaded with antioxidants that have cancer-fighting properties.
  • Whole Grains
    Whole grains are high in antioxidants and are loaded with phytochemicals that help fight heart disease and cancer. Therefore, eating at least one serving of whole grains can greatly improve your health.

Antioxidants help prevent diseases by repairing the cell damage caused by free radicals. In the heart, this damage may be in the innermost layers of the heart. Furthermore, they have been known to lower the risk of heart disease by preventing the formation of plaque in the arteries.

Although antioxidants can be taken as supplements, experts’ advise that eating foods high in antioxidants is the best way of obtaining them.
